How Small Actions Shape Our School Community
Every day at school, we have the privilege of seeing our scholars grow—not just in academics, but in the way they treat others. One of the most beautiful lessons we can teach is kindness. And it starts with something so simple: being the “I” in kind.
When we ask our scholars to “be the I in kind,” we’re inviting them to see themselves as the missing piece that makes kindness complete. The “I” represents the choice we all have to step in, take action, and make a difference—whether that’s through a smile, a helping hand, or a word of encouragement.
Why It Matters
Kindness is more than a nice gesture. In our classrooms, hallways, and playgrounds, it’s the glue that holds our community together. When a scholar decides to help a friend pick up their books, share their crayons, or invite someone to join a game, they are making school a place where everyone feels they belong.
Teachers and staff see these moments every day. We see the quiet leaders who offer support without being asked, the friends who speak up when someone is left out, and the scholars who choose to forgive when it’s easier to stay upset. These small acts may seem ordinary, but they have a powerful ripple effect.
How We Can All “Be the I”
Being the “I” in kind doesn’t mean we have to do something big or grand. It’s about small, consistent actions that create a safe and welcoming space for everyone. Here are a few ways scholars—and even adults—can practice this:
- Smile first. A smile can open the door to new friendships.
- Include others. Look for someone who’s alone and invite them to join.
- Speak up. Stand up for classmates who are being treated unfairly.
- Share and help. Whether it’s school supplies or time, giving to others shows you care.
- Listen. Sometimes, the kindest thing we can do is simply hear someone’s story.
A Community Built on Kindness
As teachers and staff, we want our scholars to understand that kindness isn’t just something we do—it’s part of who we are. When every scholar sees themselves as the “I” in kind, our school becomes a place where respect, empathy, and friendship can grow.
Let’s keep reminding our scholars (and ourselves!) that we have the power to fill the world with kindness, one small act at a time. Because when we each step into that “I,” kindness is no longer just a word—it’s a way of life.
